Mammoth Sized Desserts - Wooly's Ice
Wooly’s Ice makes me want to walk barefoot through New York on a summer’s day; but then I remember that the solace of walking without heels would not be accompanied by any stretch of sandy beach as I prepare for my commute home from Penn Station. My dessert-induced island time would be undone by a single badass shard of glass. Last year’s Vendy Winner, Wooly’s, shaves up a cup of Taiwanese-Hawaiian ice worthy of some Jimmy Buffett tunes and your lunch hour.
Wooly’s Ice makes me want to walk barefoot through New York on a summer’s day.
Located at South Street Seaport this year (2012), your “Small”, “Wooly” or “Mammoth” sized cup begins with one of four flavors of ice, shaved so thinly that you’d swear a spoonful of the layers seem creamy. Top that original, green tea, mango, or strawberry ice with a drizzle of flavored sweetened condensed milk and you, my friend are about to indulge in something so delicious you will not believe. (Wooly’s prizes its low-fat and low-calorie status but heck this is a dessert after all, and ought not be skipped!) My favorite –the sea salt leche sauce finds good company with brownie bites, mochi or fresh fruit. Co-Owner Danny Che stressed to us the importance of cutting fresh fruit daily and never using leftovers. The flavor combinations are predetermined by year one’s most popular picks. For those of you who become restaurant or vendor groupies, don’t fret routine because the cart’s twitter account (@WoolysIce) is always updating followers with surprises. Who knows if fruity pebbles might be a special topping one day!
So with prudence I keep my pumps on and find balance as I head to the station. There I find every other sweaty commuter from New Jersey, but I’m still feeling breezy. This dessert has both my island geography and serious sweets knowledge befuddled. It's Taiwanese/Haiwaiian inspired? Why does the term “healthy dessert” feel like cognitive dissonance? How can something as simple as shaved ice taste so damn good? And why isn't there a Wooly's kart parked right outside my home?

I know two facts for certain: First, I let the man yapping via Bluetooth board before me. That must be proof Wooly’s ice has some uniquely relaxing power. Secondly, Danny Che said that his sea salt leche sauce is so delicious, he’d eat it on a shoe. Danny, for another cup of shaved ice, I’ll provide you with two shoes.
The ice is flavor infused- Green Tea, Original, Mango or Strawberry. Be sure to ask for a sample.
