Living the Good Life at Lugo Caffe

...the perplexingly light meatballs, the refreshing salsa verde under the beautiful slice of branzino and the floured bread could all very well be served at the famed Harry’s Bar in Venice.

In true Italian fashion, Lugo reminds us that performance, reality, art and the day-to-day don’t truly exist independently of one another. The mirrored bar, the white and black tiled floors and the prominently displayed phrase “La Dolce Vita” warp midtown into any cafe of the northern provinces; any cafe that is which adheres to the “organic, natural mom-and-pop” roots that owner John Meadow works by. The warm-spiced and ricotta- topped gnocchi, the perplexingly light meatballs, the refreshing salsa verde under the beautiful slice of branzino and the floured bread could all very well be served at the famed Harry’s Bar in Venice. Then the caprese salad arrives. It’s always the perfect litmus test for any restaurant’s quality of produce. Not only are the tomatoes firm and without any mealy texture, but the cheese is warm and for a second I’m being introduced to an entirely different dish than the one I thought I knew.

It certainly isn’t unimaginable that there was a generous helping of wine in the meatballs’ marinara, but I wouldn’t attribute the drunken feeling I left Lugo with to any alcohol; no, this was love drunk. An infrequent romance like that, one beginning and ending in an hour and a half, one that transports me back in time and also speaks to me in Italian is just what it takes to convince me those E.L. James fans just don’t eat enough pasta.

Tip #1

Happy hour deal: $4 Prosecco glasses Mon-Fri 4pm-7pm.

Tip #2

Don’t go with a possessive friend, because you’ll want to share everything!

Sara learned about the importance of food from her father, an exceptional inhaler of anything on his plate (and hers too) and her mother, a baker. As a result, she favors the sharing and tasting aspect of tapas plates, but also anything sugary. She says the complement of food and joy is only matched by the yin and yang of health and positivity; as such, when she isn't baking for friends she can be found running or on the tennis courts.
