Around the World in Mussels

Long relegated to appetizer status behind its more prestigious cousin, the lobster, mussels have certainly stolen the show at the recently opened West Village Flex Mussels!

At this lovely shack-house styled restaurant inspired by the lushly beautiful Prince Edward Island, an entire menu of mussels are prepared in 23 different ways! So whether you’re the purist who prefers a clean classic mussel steamed in white wine and garlic or you’d like a more unconventionally prepared crustacean, there’s really something for everyone here.

So ask yourself (as a server at Flex Mussels once did): "Where do you want to go tonight?"

Southeast Asia? Then try the Thai mussels. Served with curry coconut broth, lemongrass, lime, ginger and garlic, it’s no mystery why this Asian twist is wildly popular.

Want a little taste of Europe as well? The San Daniele with its prosciutto, caramelized onions, white wine and garlic along with the Mediterranean (shrimp, kalamata olives, fennel, lemon, anise and oregano) will certainly do the trick! Do remember to ask about the Number 23 too. Like a restaurant special, this flavor changes daily, so we tried a little Greek version with feta cheese and olives!

If you’re craving a little variety by now, go ahead and flip the menu over. The Spicy Greens salad with baby arugula, shaved fennel, shaved Parmesan and peppercorn vinaigrette is certainly a good way to begin the seafood extravaganza before moving on to an oyster plate. The selection also changes nightly here but if the sweet, small oysters of PEI make an appearance, be sure to grab a few!

It might be tempting, at this point, to eat your fill of mussels and oysters but save some room for an ultimate classic: the lobster roll (and wow, are they good here)! Overstuffed and flowing with the chunky pieces of 1 and ¼ of a lobster, this lobster roll has just the right hint of aioli, celery, lemon and a tiny bit of mayonnaise all mixed into a soft, buttery brioche bun.

Just in case you need another reason to try this perfect lobster roll, they come with a generous side of Flex French fries! Thin, salty and crispy, these wonderful bite size treats are absolute perfection when paired with your plate of mussels! Bon Appetit!

Tip #1

Happy hour on weekdays from 5:30 to 6:30 PM includes dollar oysters and all you can eat mussels and fries!

Tip #2

When the dessert menu arrives, ask your server for the secret "drunken" donut of the day!
